The political voice for the shooting sports
W
elcome to the Combined Firearms Council of Victoria website.

The CFCV represents Victoria's major shooting organisations to provide a political voice for Victoria's 200,000 licensed shooters.

It was formed in late 2002 on the back of the handgun issue, with the specific aim of securing political support for the shooting sports in State and Federal Elections.

It is necessary to stop shooters being used as soft targets yet again. We have to stop firearm policy being developed "on the run".

In April 2006, our then Prime Minister, John Howard, indicated that more restrictions on firearms were not out of the question, so the risk of bad policy decisions remains real.

The CFCV seeks to ensure we have effective political support by supporting those candidates who support the shooting sports and opposing those who do not.

The establishment of the Firearms Consultative Committee has helped bridge an 'information gap' that previously existed between Government and the shooting community - but more work is needed to ensure that the benefits of our work keep growing.

There are 88 lower house electorates in Victoria, which means there is an average of 2,300 shooters in every one. There are normally around 35,000 voters per electorate which equates to an average of 6.5% who hold shooters licences.

However some regional electorates have up to 34% of voters who holding shooters licences (while some city seats have hardly any). Responses through FOI have allowed us to identify where they are - and we are using that as part of our strategy.

The CFCV also provides an effective vehicle through which it can promote issues through the major media outlets.

Our former Prime Minister, as many will remember him.

We've also secured some significant 'wins' including the re-establishment of the Firearms Consultative Committee, funding for game management officers, election commitments from each of the three major parties and a feasibility study into a multi-discipline shooting centre.

Our effectiveness will depend heavily on the amount of support provided by the shooting community - ie. you!!

It depends on you being prepared to support the CFCV by shopping at IGA Ritchies with us as your preferred charity [click here for more info], making a donation (using the application form), and casting your vote according to our election strategies.

In the meantime, here's an interesting video from 20/20 on the problem with over zealous gun control. Judge for yourself.
